The EBL Women Committee was created  in 1985. The first chairman was Anna Maria Torlontano of Italy, who continues to lead the Committee today. The Committee exists in order to serve women bridge players who constitute the majority of the members of the NBOs worldwide. The aims of the Committee can be specified as follows:

  • Bridge has been recognized by IOC (International Olympic Committee) to be a sport, and the World Bridge Federation is an International Sports Federation.
  • Within the Olympic Movement, women should be represented not only in sports but also in the fields of public relations, administration, and so forth. One thing is certain: in the majority of countries, women bridge players outnumber men.
  • To pursue Women Bridge it is important to have a 'Delegate' in each country, who would take care of its promotion. We reckon that it would be easier to work closely with such a person, rather than the President of the Federation who may be too busy with other problems.
  • Offering any kind of information and suggestions, helping with teaching material, (books, etc.) and the teaching program, available now in English, French, Spanish and Chinese on Internet. Advice on how women can be trained to become Tournament Directors, in accordance with EBL policy.
  • Convince, and this is very important, all NBOs to send women players to represent their country to EBL championships. We do need to increase the number of teams participating in the women series of the European Team Championships.
  • Last, but not least: to try and develop women bridge in general, specially in the less advanced countries.
